Porter and his brother Lloyd relocated to Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in 2004. He performed as well as worked as a chef at Lloyd’s now-closed restaurant Bread-Stuy.

Porter started out doing shows at local establishments like Sista’s Place and Solomon’s Porch before making his way to the Harlem nightclub St. Nick’s Pub, where he was a weekly fixture. What would eventually become Porter’s touring band was formed during this stint.

Porter collaborated with Membran Entertainment Group to record two albums on the Motéma label, Water (2010) and Be Good (2012), before joining Blue Note Records (a division of Universal Music Group) on May 17, 2013. Liquid Spirit, his third album, was released in the US on September 17, 2013, and in Europe on September 2, 2013.

The record took home the 2014 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Record, produced by Brian Bacchus. Liquid Spirit reached the top 10 on the UK album charts and saw a level of commercial success uncommon for jazz recordings.
