Before turning pro on the road, Gino Mader was a top-level track cyclist, competing in the 2016 UEC European Track Championship team pursuit competition. In 2019 he turned full professional with UCI WorldTeam Team Dimension Data. In October 2020, he was named on the starting list for the 2020 Vuelta a Espana.

On the seventh stage between Paris and Nice in 2021, Gino Mader joined the escape and almost won the stage. However, he was caught and passed by Primoš Roglic with 50 meters to go. He received the Combat Readiness Award for the day.

Later that year, Gino Mader drove the 2021 Vuelta a España, finishing seventh in the mountain stages after losing three minutes in the first eight stages, from the ninth stage to Alto de Velefiche. It showed a strong performance. He continued to perform well as the race progressed, serving as Jack Haig’s domestic. On stage 17, which ended at Lagos de Covadonga, Gino Mader finished in the elite group one and a half minutes behind leader Primoš Roglic. As a result, he finished in the top 10 overall.

The next day, on the race’s queen stage to Altu d’El Gamoniteiru [es], Haig and Gino Mader finished fifth and seventh, respectively, at almost a minute down, with Gino Mader moving up to eighth on GC. On the race’s penultimate stage, Gino Mader and Haig, together with Roglič, Enric Mas, and Adam Yates, comprised the five-man group that escaped from the GC group on the third to the last climb.

The group continued to build their advantage over the other contenders, with the move allowing Gino Mader to rise inside the top five overall and Haig to move into the third spot on GC. He also took the lead in the young rider classification as he overhauled Egan Bernal. He held his position in the final daytime trial to finish the Vuelta in fifth and confirm his victory in the young rider classification.

During the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse on 15 June 2023, Gino Mader suffered a fall in a turn when descending from the stage’s highest point at Albula Pass. The American cyclist Magnus Sheffield had fallen at almost the exact same spot a few minutes earlier. Gino Mader was found to be unconscious and submerged in water. He was resuscitated and airlifted to a hospital in Chur but died from his injuries a day later at the age of 26.
