After a short sabbatical in Tamil cinema, Shaam came back in 2019 with the long-delayed Tamil film Kaaviyyan.

Shaam’s (Actor) Biography

Shamshuddin Ibrahim known professionally as Shaam is an Indian actor and model who appears mainly in Tamil and Telugu films. He started his career as a professional model and soon made his acting debut in the film 12B (2001). He has also appeared in lead roles in films such as Lesa Lesa (2003), Iyarkai (2003), and Ullam Ketkumae (2005).

He was recognized for his role in the Telugu film Kick (2009) and was given the name Kick Shaam. The kick enabled Shaam to appear in other notable Telugu films such as Race Gurram (2014). After a hiatus, he returned to Tamil cinema with 6 (2013) and Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai (2015).

Shaam started his modeling career in Bangalore and has modeled for various advertisements. Eager for his acting career, he searched for acting offers for four years unsuccessfully. He auditioned for the lead role in Kadhalar Dhinam (1999), but he didn’t get the part. Then, at the recommendation of his coordinator Biju Jayadevan, he met Jeeva a cinematographer who was planning his directorial debut and was looking for new faces to appear in the film.

He was offered a role in the film 12B. After meeting producer Vikram Singh, he was signed when he introduced himself in English and Tamil to Jeeva. Promotion for the film received critical acclaim, and Shaam signed on for several projects before the 12B was released.

However, his second feature film Kush directed by SJ Suryah, in which he had a cameo, was released first as 12B stalled in production and was not released until 2001. A blatant ripoff of Sliding Door, which itself has been compared numerous times to Krzysztof’s Kieslowski-directed 1982 Polish film Blind Chance, the film was critically acclaimed and considered a “dream screening” of Shaam. According to Paarthale Paravasam (2001), Shaam said he was to work with K. Balachander, but the project never materialized.

His subsequent release Vasanth`s Yai! Nee Romba Azhaga Irukey! (2002), Anbe Anbe (2003), and Priyadarshan’s Lesa Lesa (2003) achieved only average or low box office returns. However, the film’s failure prompted him to stick with romantic films. Iyarkai by debutant S P Jananathan was his last release of 2003 which also failed at the box office due to its late release but received critical acclaim and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.

Ultimately, Jeeva’s Ullam Ketkumae was a commercial success. It was Shaam’s first successful film, and one critic said that “he is able to bring out the sensibilities of his characters”. ABCD is a romantic movie released in August 2005. In 2006, he starred in the love story Manathodu Mazhaikalam. The film was released to negative reviews. He made his Kannada debut in the movie Tananam Tananam.

In 2007, after Jeeva’s death, Shaam struggled to find success in the Tamil film industry. In 2008, he appeared in the film Thoondil directed by K. S. Adhiyaman. Next is Imba after Sneha. It is his third collaboration with actress Sneha and they did not make an impact at the box office.
