Valdivia entered the football academy at Colo-Colo in 1993. In 2003, when he was nineteen years old, he was elevated to the first team.
Nevertheless, he was demotivated by his colleagues’ bad behavior off the field, especially that of captain Marcelo Espina.
Valdivia was loaned to fellow Chilean Primera División squad Universidad de Concepción after dropping out of Colo-Colo’s first team figures.
On March 16, 2003, he made his Concepción professional debut after replacing Pablo Abdala in the second half of the team’s 2-1 loss against Cobresal on the road.
On April 6, he made his debut and scored the final goal for his team in a 3-1 victory over Unión Espaola at home.
That made it possible for him to receive another loan, this time to Segunda División team Rayo Vallecano, where he only appeared in five games and went goalless.
After another loan stint at Servette in Switzerland, Valdivia could have played for Boca Juniors, a team willing to pay US$1.5 million for him. However, the transfer negotiations fell through, and he ultimately returned to Colo-Colo.
He went back to Colo-Colo in 2005. The same year, he began but didn’t complete his journalism studies at the University of the Americas to supplement his football career.
Then, in 2006, Valdivia assisted his team in winning the Torneo Apertura, when he once more turned in a strong performance that was honed by the time’s top coach, Claudio Borghi.
He made special mention of a team that included international athletes from Chile like Claudio Bravo, Matias Fernández, and Humberto Suazo.
Valdivia transferred to Brazilian team Palmeiras on August 5, 2006, paying a transfer fee of US$3.5 million. The club’s most costly foreign player signing of the year was his.
It was announced in August 2008 that Valdivia had signed a two-year, €8 million contract to play for Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates. He won the President Cup, Super Cup, and Etisalat Emirates Cup at the Emirati club.
His potential return to Palmeiras was the subject of numerous speculations before, during, and after the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It ultimately happened on July 26 after Al-Ain and the So Paulo-based side reached an agreement for a €16 million transfer.

The athlete and the team agreed on a two-season deal with a salary of US$2.8 million annually. On June 19, 2017, Valdivia made a trip back to his original club, Colo-Colo. Colo-Colo declared in December 2019 that they will not be extending his contract.
Valdivia signed with Liga MX team Morelia on January 16, 2020. On the radio show Los Tenores (The Tenors) from ADN Radio Chile on July 1, 2022, Valdivia announced that he had already made the decision to stop playing football in favor of a career as a football manager and a job in TV media.
