Ghana Institute of Journalism- or GIJ for short- is a public university that has been accredited by the National Accreditation Board. It was founded on 16th October, 1959 and happens to be the first school for journalism established in Ghana. It is deemed as the premier university for media and communication training in Ghana and is a known pioneer in the Sub-Saharan African Region.

FACULTY OF JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES
- A. IN COMMUNICATION STUDIES (JOURNALISM OPTION)
Here, students will have the opportunity to explore the functions, processes, channels, and influences of communication. They usually acquire skills in: critical analysis proficiency, social scientific and humanistic research methods, argumentation, and oral written presentation.
At GIJ you can offer this course as a regular student or opt for top-up weekend sessions on Saturdays and Sundays, 7.00 am – 8.00 pm.
FACULTY OF PUBLIC RELATIONS, ADVERTISING & MARKETING
A. IN COMMUNICATION STUDIES (PUBLIC RELATIONS OPTION)
Students will be able to learn about how the theories of communication influencing public relations are practiced while expanding their knowledge base and honing the skills they need for strategic and critical thinking, speaking and writing, which are the basic foundations for becoming a PR professional. At GIJ, you can offer this course as a regular student or take top-up weekend sessions. Lectures for this option are on Saturdays and Sundays, 7.00 am – 8.00 pm.
FACULTY OF INTEGRATED COMMUNICATION SCIENCES
DIPLOMA IN COMMUNICATION STUDIES
This is an introductory course which is designed to develop the skills and knowledge of students so that they have a solid foundation to enter high demand advertising, corporate communication, public relations, marketing and broadcasting industry. You can take this course as a regular student or go for evening sessions which start from 4 pm to 8 pm, or attend weekend lectures on Saturdays and Sundays from 7 am to 8 pm.

M.A. IN JOURNALISM
This is a 12-month programme aimed at training people from various backgrounds to apply and utilise concepts and models of journalism within the broad social science traditions of media and communication whilst using the necessary technology to do so.
M.A. IN PUBLIC RELATIONS
The postgraduate programme in Public Relations is a one-year programme. The main goal of the programme is to develop the manpower potential of this brand of professionals to use public relations strategies in their organisations in addition to bridging an intellectual gap; the inability of communication training institutions to focus on the specialised skills development and training of public relations practitioners.
M.A. IN MEDIA MANAGEMENT
This course will provide higher skills acquisition and knowledge to participants who are managing the media as well as the future generation of media practitioners aiming to become media owners and managers.
M.A. IN DEVELOPMENT COMMUNICATION
Here you will learn how to apply the nuances of development communication to build understanding through a critical analysis of communication theory and practice within development contexts.

Radio and Television Presentation
: This programme is designed to give you a complete foundation in the essentials of radio and TV presenting, voice-overs for advertisements or videos, as well as public speaking.You may be introduced to the techniques that experienced and professional voice-over artists use, with practical experience of recording in studios for advertisements and/or audio visuals.
Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing:
Here, you will learn how to plan, direct and evaluate the activities of firms and departments that develop and implement advertising campaigns to promote the sales of products and services.
Advanced Advertising:
In this course, students will be taken through the brands, definition and principles of good advertising. They will also examine how to plan campaigns for marketing briefs, or client’s intention, and advertising proposals or agency’s responses.
Advanced Public Relations:
this course builds on existing knowledge of public relations, tools and techniques used by public relations professionals, as well as the understanding that public relations is a strategic management function that can build and sustain positive relationships with key publics via sincere engagement.
Advanced Communications:
Students will be able to learn worthwhile concepts and practices for workforce planning, strategic staffing, training and development, performance management, and evaluating the effectiveness of the HRM function.
Advanced Marketing:
Students stand to gain in-depth understanding of the design, development, marketing, and analysis of a business plan and study the key components of building, executing, and presenting a brand, in addition to learning how marketing influences decision making at the management level.
Broadcast Journalism:
The course is aimed at introducing students to professional broadcast news writing through the principles and techniques of broadcast journalism as well as some practical skills in Radio and Television production.
Action and Strategic Planning:
Here, you will learn how to plan for and predict consequences and trends for your business, how to curate information, notice issues, and form relationships. In addition, you will learn how to commit to a course of action, develop different solutions, and use facts, resources, and organisational values to achieve your goals.
Radio Journalism:
You can learn how to broadcast news writing professionally. You will be taken through the principles and techniques of broadcast journalism as well as some practical skills in Radio and Television production.
Online Journalism:
Here, you will learn how to create enhanced news content for online and social media through research, verification and writing stories, as well as sourcing audios and videos to illustrate them.
T.V. Journalism:
The course is intended to give students a foundation in television journalism that is applicable to television broadcasting as well as to audio visual journalism on the Internet and mobile media.
Students will learn how to research, develop, plan, shoot and edit television stories. They will understand television storytelling and how it differs from other media, as well as learning to analyse television news stories and the narrative techniques employed, basic skills, and concepts in shooting and editing television material.
Writing Skills:
This course will teach you how to write clearly and professionally to capture the attention of your intended business audience.
Photo-Journalism:
This course will give students the opportunity to explore the technicalities surrounding the practice from a working photojournalist who will teach everything needed to know from taking portraits, developing creativity in images, and understanding the legal and ethical aspects of photojournalism.
Contemporary English Language:
This course focuses on grammar of the contemporary English language, and emphasises on syntactic units and their features, as well as on the reading of texts in order to expand vocabulary and develop written and oral communication skills.
Events Management:
Here, you will be provided with knowledge and skills in strategic events planning, marketing, budgeting and financial planning, human resource planning, sites and venues, and many other vital topics.
Customer Care:
This course is designed to develop skills and behaviours to offer outstanding customer service. It also empowers participants to provide effective solutions to customer facing problems, when they arise.
Writing for Newspapers & Magazines:
- Effective Public Speaking, Speech Writing and Presentation: This course provides guidance in preparation and delivery of speeches within frames of public context. It pays particular attention to the realisation of a number of tasks, such as: gaining the basic rhetoric expertise, mastering presentations, speaking on special occasions and preparing a workshop.
How to Get Admission to GIJ
To gain admission, you must first apply.
- Applicants must pay the relevant application fee at any Fidelity Bank Branch and provide their name and number. The application fee for a diploma course is GHS 200, for a degree it is GHS 250, for mature students it costs GHS 650 and includes tutorials and an examination, and lastly, international students are required to pay a sum of USD 100.
- An application number or transaction ID will be given to you at the bank; this will grant you access to the school’s online admission portal.
- Visit the online admission portal via the URL and start the application process.
- Upon completion, a copy of the completed application form must be printed and either sent along with one passport picture and requisite documents to the school’s address or through their email.
Minimum Entry Requirements
Undergraduate:
SSSCE HOLDERS
Applicants must possess grades (A – D) in six subjects; three of which must be core subjects, including English, Mathematics and three elective subjects with a total aggregate of 24 or better.
WASSCE HOLDERS
Applicants must have grades worth (A1-C6) in six subjects comprising three core subjects, including English, Mathematics and three elective subjects with an overall aggregate of 36 or better.
Diploma:
SSSCE HOLDERS
Applicants must have grades (A-D) in five subjects comprising three core subjects, including English, Mathematics and two elective subjects with an overall aggregate of 20 or better.
WASSCE HOLDERS
Applicants must possess a pass mark of (A1-C6) in five subjects comprising of three core subjects, including English, Mathematics and two elective subjects with an overall aggregate of 30 or better.
Mature Student:
To enter the Ghana Institute of Journalism as a Mature Student, you must not be less than 25 years old.
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum requirements:
- You must have a credit pass (A1 – C6 in WASSCE and A – D in SSSCE) in five subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language and Core Mathematics and two elective subjects.
- Applicants whose qualifications do not meet the requirements for admission, as mentioned above, may be considered for admission on passing a special entrance examination conducted by the University as well as an interview. It should be noted that those who meet the requirements for admission will not be required to take any entrance examination.
- Level 200: GIJ Diploma holders with a CGPA of 1.79 and below can apply to be admitted to level 200.
- International Students: International students who hold equivalent qualifications are eligible to apply for any of the programmes.
Can I Apply to GIJ With D7 And E8 in WASSCE?
GIJ is quite strict with their grades, and only a D7 or E8 in Integrated Science can apply to the school provided they had good grades in English, Maths and Social Studies.
