Graf Henckel von Donnersmarck was born in 1973 in Cologne, West Germany, into the aristocratic Roman Catholic Henckel von Donnersmarck family. He was raised within New York City, Brussels, Frankfurt, and West Berlin and is proficient of English, German, French, Russian, and Italian. After having graduated with the highest marks in his class at the German section of the European School of Brussels I and II, he pursued a degree in Russian literary studies at St. Petersburg for two years. He also passed an official state Exam to be a teacher of Russian as an International Language. He has an MA in Arts degree in philosophy, politics and economics from New College, Oxford, as well as a certificate in film direction at The University of Television and Film Munich.
His debut feature film Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) that Donnersmarck wrote for three years and directing, as well as finishing and won the European Film Award for Best Film and the Best Actor and the Best Screenplay in the year 2006. Donnersmarck received an award from the LA Film Critics Association to Best Foreign Film, was nominated for the Golden Globe (which went to Clint Eastwood instead), and on February 25, 2007 was awarded the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. In 2011, Donnersmarck was honoured by the University of Oxford, his alma mater, as one of its 100 most distinguished members from 10 centuries. The university named 100 streets in Oxford’s historical centre after these graduates, with Upper Oxpens Road renamed for Donnersmarck.
The year 1996 was the first time he received an acting apprenticeship alongside Richard Attenborough on In Love and War Then, he attended the Fiction Directing Class of the Hochschule fur Fernsehen und Film Munchen (University of Television and Film Munich), Germany, alma school of directors like Wim Wenders Roland Emmerich and Maren Ade who was Donnersmarck’s classmate. The first short film he directed, Dobermann (which he wrote and produced, directed and edited) was a record of the school for the number of awards given to students’ productions. The film became an international festival hit and Donnersmarck made it to festivals for over a whole year.
