Fatima Whitbread Husband: Is Fatima Whitbread still married? – Fatima Whitbread, MBE, is a retired British javelin thrower and an iconic figure in the world of athletics.
Born Fatima Vedad on March 3, 1961, in the United Kingdom, she endured a difficult early childhood, which led to her being adopted by the Whitbread family. Margaret Whitbread, a javelin coach, became her adoptive mother and helped to shape her passion for the sport.
Whitbread made her debut in athletics by winning the 1977 English Schools’ Athletics Championships intermediate title, and the following year she represented Great Britain at the Commonwealth Games where she finished in sixth place. She continued to shine on the international stage, winning the gold medal at the 1979 European Athletics Junior Championships.
In 1984, she represented Great Britain at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where she won the bronze medal, becoming the first British woman to win an Olympic javelin medal. In 1986, Whitbread broke the world record for javelin throw with a remarkable 77.44m in the qualifying round of the European Athletics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. This accomplishment made her the first British athlete to set a world record in a throwing event. Later that year, she went on to win the European title and the following year she took home the gold medal at the 1987 World Championships.
During her career, Whitbread had a well-publicized rivalry with another British javelin athlete, Tessa Sanderson. Her career was affected by a long-term shoulder injury, which she believed dated back to her world record throw in 1986. Despite her injury, she continued to compete and won the silver medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
In recognition of her exceptional achievements in the sport, Whitbread was named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1987 and was twice awarded the Sports Writers’ Association Sportswoman of the Year in 1986 and 1987. She was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1987 Birthday Honours, for services to athletics.
Fatima Whitbread’s legacy in athletics continues to inspire young athletes across the world. She has also made numerous television appearances and became a household name when she participated in the popular reality show, I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! in 2011.
Fatima Whitbread Husband: Is Fatima Whitbread still married?
In her 2012 autobiography, Fatima Whitbread revealed that she started a romantic relationship with her future husband, Andy Norman, soon after his divorce in 1986.
However, in 1993, journalist Cliff Temple conducted an investigation into allegations that members of the Chafford Hundred Athletic Club, which was managed by Norman and included top athletes coached by him, received special treatment from Norman in his role as promotions officer of the British Athletics Federation (BAF). Temple published an article in The Sunday Times that raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest.
Tragically, Temple committed suicide in January 1994, and it was later revealed during the inquest into his death that Norman had threatened and falsely accused him. Norman spread rumors that Temple had sexually harassed Shireen Bailey, one of Temple’s coached athletes. However, Bailey denied these allegations. Norman was dismissed from his position as promotions officer for the BAF following the federation’s investigation into the matter.
The inquest concluded that while the end of Temple’s marriage was a contributing factor to his suicide, the allegations made by Norman were the other factor that “tipped the balance.” In 1997, Whitbread and Norman tied the knot in Copthorne, West Sussex, and welcomed a son into the world. However, their marriage came to an end in 2006, and Norman passed away from a heart attack in 2007.
