He previously worked for Agence France Presse and The Moscow Times before moving to the Wall Street Journal in January last year (2022).
In March 2023, Evan Gershkovich hit the headlines after it was reported that he has been arrested in Russia and accused of spying while working for the Wall Street Journal.
Russia’s main security service, the FSB, claimed Thursday, March 30 that Evan Gershkovich, a correspondent based in Moscow, had been trying to obtain state secrets.
He was working in Yekaterinburg when arrested, covering the Russian mercenary military organization Wagner. The White House has condemned his detention “in the strongest terms”.
The Wall Street Journal categorically rejected those allegations, saying in a statement that it “vehemently denies the allegations from the FSB and seeks the immediate release of our trusted and dedicated reporter.”
Evan Gershkovich’s arrest marks the first time an American journalist had been detained since the Cold War.
