Emre Can Biography

Emre Can is a professional footballer from Germany who plays as a central midfielder for Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and the Germany national team. A versatile and a prolific player who can play as a defensive midfielder, centre-back and full-back.

Emre was born on 12th January 1994 in Frankfurt, Germany. He is now 29 years of age. Emre has a height of 1.86 meters. He weighs 86 kilograms.

Emre Can Career

Can started his career with a local side SV Blau-Gelb Frankfurt at t he age of six and remained at the club for six years. He joined the youth academy of Eintracht Frankfurt in 2006. During his time with both Frankfurt clubs, he predominantly played in midfield where he assumed an attacking role. Emre moved to the Bavarian club, Bayern Munich in 2009.

In Bayern Munich, he played with the reserve side of the club as a central defender and later returned to the midfield position. Emre was competing three great world midfielders—Bastian Schweinsteiger, Javi Martínez and Luiz Gustavo—for the position in the starting line-up of the club.

In the quest to gain more playing time, Can signed for Bayern Leverkusen on a four-year deal, on 2nd August, 2013. In his 2013/2014 season with the club, he displayed a very good performances which caught the attention of the English side, Liverpool FC. 

On 3rd July, 2014, Liverpool completed the signing of Emre Can by activating his release clause of £9.75 million (€12 million). He made a great spell at the Merseyside club. He became a key player at the club. However, when his contract was set to expire on 1st July, 2018, the club announced that, it wouldn’t be renewed.

Can signed a four-year deal with Serie A side Juventus for €16 million in additional costs for his services on 21st June 2018, Can’s contract included a set €50 million release clause which was to start on his third year of contract and valid for clubs outside of Italy only. He enjoyed his stay for the first season, however, things changed when a new Manager, Mauricio Sarri took in-charged of the club.

Can, on 31st January, 2020, signed a loan with Borussia Dortmund until the end of the season with a buy clause. He eventually signed a permanent deal with Dortmund for a €25 millions four-year contract.

Emre has represented his country, Germany on numerous occasions starting from the Under-15. He has played for all the junior teams; under-15, under-16, under-17, under-19 and under-21.

Can received his first senior call-up from manager Joachim Löw, on 28th August 2015. He was part of the 23-man squad for UEFA Euro 2016, 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and  UEFA Euro 2020.

As at 29th January 2023, Can has made 390 appearances in his entire professional club football, scoring 35 goals. For his International side, he has played 37 games and scored 1 goal as at 29th June, 2021.
