Between 1973 and 1987, he participated in 14 NHL seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, and New Jersey Devils. From the start of the Colorado Avalanche’s first season in 1995–96 until his passing, he later worked as a color analyst for the team.
When he was 14 years old, McNab moved to San Diego, California, where his father was the manager of the minor league San Diego Gulls. McNab was born and raised in Vancouver, where he now resides.

Peter played baseball to start his career. He was admitted to DU on a baseball scholarship and later switched to hockey, where he won the 1973 WCHA All-Star award.
McNab led Cincinnati in scoring in the 1973–74 American Hockey League (AHL) season despite playing in just 49 of its 76 games. The NHL team Buffalo welcomed McNab the following season.
McNab was traded to the Boston Bruins after reaching the 1975 Stanley Cup Finals. In Boston, where he played in the 1977 NHL All-Star Game and put up at least 35 goals and 75 points six straight seasons, he enjoyed his best NHL seasons.

In the 1987–88 season, McNab began working as a color analyst for the Devils after he retired.
After eight years of covering the Devils for SportsChannel, he relocated to Colorado for the inaugural season of the Colorado Avalanche.
While the Olympics were being held in Nagano, Japan, he also worked as a TV announcer for NBC as a color analyst for TNT and as an analyst on NHL on NBC while the Winter Olympics were being held in Turin, Italy, in 2006.
McNab was given a cancer diagnosis in 2021. Despite receiving chemotherapy, he continued to work as an Avalanche color analyst. Doctors informed McNab that his cancer had entered remission in February 2022. On November 6, 2022, McNab, who was 70 years old, passed away.
