Ellen Barkin is an American actress and producer best known for her role in the 1982 film Diner.

Barkin was born in The Bronx, New York, the daughter of Evelyn, a hospital administrator at Jamaica Hospital, and Sol Barkin, a chemical salesman. Her family was Jewish, having fled Siberia and the Russian-Polish border.

Barkin attended Flushing’s Parsons Junior High School, and she is also a graduate of Manhattan’s High School of Performing Arts.

She then went on to study history and drama at Hunter College. Barkin once wanted to teach ancient history. She continued her acting studies at the Actors Studio in New York City. She is known for studying acting for ten years before her first audition.

Her breakthrough role was in Barry Levinson’s comedy-drama film Diner, for which she received positive reviews.

Despite her inexperience and his lack of familiarity with her work, Barkin was cast in the drama film Tender Mercies after impressing its director Bruce Beresford during an audition in New York City.

She also appeared in Eddie and the Cruisers, a rock and roll drama film released in 1983.

Barkin went on to star in several successful films, including the thrillers The Big Easy, in which he co-starred with Dennis Quaid, and Sea of Love, in which he co-starred with Al Pacino.

Barkin has also appeared in off-Broadway plays, including one as one of the roommates in Extremities, a play about a rape victim played by Susan Sarandon who turns the tables on her attacker.

Barkin has also appeared in television movies such as Before Women Had Wings, for which she received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie, and The White River Kid. On XM’s Deep Tracks, she introduced each Theme Time Radio Hour with host Bob Dylan.

Barkin founded a film production company with her brother, George, and her then-husband, billionaire investor Ronald Perelman, in 2005.

Barkin has two children from her first marriage to actor Gabriel Byrne, Jack Daniel, and Romy Marion, however, the couple’s marriage never saw the light of the day as they got separated in the year 1993 and they were legally divorced in 1999. Even after their divorce, they remain close due to their children.

Byrne even attended Barkin’s wedding to billionaire businessman Ronald Perelman in 2000. That marriage ended in divorce in 2006, according to New York magazine.

Barkin was in a relationship with Johnny Depp, who she worked with on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, in 1998, and also Barkin was rumored to have dated filmmaker Sam Levinson from 2008 to 2011.

“Magnificent Jewels from the Collection of Ellen Barkin” sold for $20,369,200 at Christie’s in New York in October 2006. Barkin sued Perelman in 2007 for $3.4 million in investment funds that he allegedly promised to put into their film production company. He was ordered to pay her $4.3 million in damages.

George Barkin, Barkin’s brother, was previously the editor-in-chief of National Lampoon and High Times.

However, this never materialized as she was not called during the trial with the trial ending some weeks ago with the charges against Depp being dropped.
