Donald Walton and Edwina Lynch welcomed David Keith Lynch into the world on January 20, 1946 in Missoula, Montana. David has two siblings. He has a brother called John Lynch and a sister called Martha Lynch.

David moved about a lot as a boy, spending time in Spokane, Washington, Durham, North Carolina, Boise, Idaho, and Alexandria, Virginia since his father was a research scientist for the U.S. Department.

David participated in the Boy Scouts outside of school and was present when John F. Kennedy was sworn in as president alongside other scouts in front of the White House.

After graduating from Francis C. Hammond High School, Lynch enrolled at the Corcoran School of Arts and Design in Washington, D.C., where he started his studies. Lynch had always been interested in drawing and painting.

Lynch moved to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 1964, but he departed after a year because he didn’t find it motivating.
