Amelia Falk, a British Jew from London who was of German and Jewish ancestry, was his paternal grandmother. Evelyn Geldof, Geldof’s mother, passed away at age 41 from a brain hemorrhage when Geldof was six years old.
While Geldof was a student at Blackrock College, he endured bullying because he was a bad rugby player and because Zenon was his middle name.
In Wisbech, England, he worked as a slaughterman, a road navvy, and a pea canner before moving to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, to work as a music journalist for The Georgia Straight. He briefly served as a guest host on the children’s show Switchback on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Bob Geldof career
Geldof rose to prominence in the late 1970s as the lead singer of the Irish rock band the Boomtown Rats, who achieved popularity as part of the punk rock movement.
His co-composition “Rat Trap” and his lone song “I Don’t Like Mondays” both became UK number-one hits for the band.
In Pink Floyd – The Wall, a 1982 movie starring Pink Floyd, Geldof played Pink. Geldof co-wrote “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”, one of the all-time best-selling singles, and coordinated the charitable supergroup Band Aid, the events Live Aid, and Live 8, all of which were performed as fundraisers.
For his involvement, particularly in tackling African poverty, Geldof is well known. In order to generate money for famine assistance in Ethiopia, he and Midge Ure established the nonprofit supergroup Band-Aid in 1984.
They later organized the Live 8 concerts in 2005 and the charity mega-concert Live Aid the year after.
A member of the Africa Progress Panel (APP), a group of ten eminent people who advocate at the highest levels for equitable and sustainable development in Africa, Geldof presently acts as an adviser to the ONE Campaign, co-founded with fellow Irish rock singer and activist Bono.
Geldof, a single parent, has been a vocal supporter of the fathers’ rights movement. Due to his humanitarian activities in Africa, Geldof was awarded an honorary knighthood (KBE) Queen Elizabeth II in 1986. Although being an Irish citizen, Sir Bob is often used to refer to him.
Among many other honors and nominations, he has received the Man of Peace title, which honors people who have “made an outstanding contribution to international social justice and peace.” The Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music was given to him in 2005.
