Barbra Streisand’s Biography

Diana Rosen and Emanuel Streisand welcomed Barbra Joan Streisand into the world on April 24, 1942, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. When Streisand was just 15 months old, her father, an English teacher at a high school, passed away as a result of the consequences of an epileptic episode.

While working as a secretary in the New York City public school system to raise Streisand and her elder brother, Sheldon, the family barely scraped by on the edge of destitution.

To make finances meet, they moved in with Streisand’s grandparents. While Streisand was gone at camp, her mother remarried in 1949 to used-car dealer Louis Kind. Rosalind, her half-sister, was born in 1951.

Streisand has said that her early years were difficult. She was a shy youngster who often felt different from other kids due to her odd appearance. She also saw her stepfather as being emotionally abusive. Additionally, she had little encouragement from her mother, who believed she was too ugly to pursue her aspirations of a career in show business.

Streisand participated in the school choir when she was a student at Bais Yakov School. After finishing elementary school, Streisand attended Erasmus Hall High School, where she met Neil Diamond, a future working partner. Streisand started going to New York City to pursue acting even before she finished high school.

At the Cherry Lane Theater in Greenwich Village, she first met Anita and Alan Miller when she was 15 years old. With the help of the couple, Streisand arranged a contract in which she would watch their kids in return for a scholarship to Alan’s acting program.

She attended one of two events at once. At age 16, she received her diploma from Erasmus High in 1959. She came in fourth place overall.
